Sorry, this welcome is long overdue!

Ringmomma has been busy. So I apologize...please welcome

Winston's Mom

Thoughts on the ring rules: Obviously, I have not been able to post much, and I was never one to really get too crazy about busting people for not posting often enough. But I pretty much reserve the right to bump off the ring if one has not updated their blog in a very long period of time (so many months to a year). I think that is pretty fair and reasonable. And once one is bumped off, if they show they are really active again, they can always rejoin. Because things come up in our lives that take us off schedule more than we would like, and blogging is not always the most important thing going on!

Updates

I have created an Alaskan Knitters Group on Ravelry. So if you are lucky enough to be a member of ravelry, please join us there! We can have active discussions and keep up with each other there as well as on the ringsurf.

If you are not a member yet, please sign up to get in the queue, and be patient. It took me months to get added.

In other news, if you are looking to be added to the ringsurf, please please please do not forget to add the code to your webpage first. I cannot add you until you add the code.

Thanks!

Buttons buttons who has a button?

Our very own photographer and graphic artist, Indigo Mouse, has very generously created photo buttons for us to use in three different sizes.

I am currently using the smallest size on my blog, as it fits best into my sidebar.

I am definitely no HTML or web page expert, but I have made an attempt at how to build a button for your blog in the tutorial below:

1. First, right click on which button size image you wish to use. Then select "Save Picture As." Save the picture into the folder on your computer where you will remember to find it.

2. Login in to your blog. Open up your template and chose whatever option allows you to insert a section of HTML code for your button in the location where you want it to be. If you use Blogger, you would go to "Template-->Add a Page Element--> HTML/Java Script."

3. Type the following code into your blog and save it. If you are a member and you wish me to email you a copy of the code, please email me. I inserted it as an image here in order to keep the code inactive without making the code more confusing.

4. Now upload the saved button image to a web hosting and file sharing service. I use ripway.com, since that is the one that I have read about on Blog U and it is free. I am sure there are others out there.

5. Once it is uploaded to the file sharing service, be sure to find the image's "Direct Link URL." Select the text of the Direct Link URL and "copy" it so that you will be able to post it into the section of the HTML code where it says COPY AND PASTE DIRECT LINK URL HERE.

6. Save your HTML code and make sure that the picture part of the button and the other ring links still work.

Using the file sharing service should be very easy. You should be able to just upload an image and it will automatically give you the image's direct link URL. It is important that you use a file sharing service, so that you will not steal bandwidth from someone else who is hosting the image on their site. This website here helps explain it. It also has other tips for knit bloggers.

I don't know much about any other software other than blogger, but let me and the ring know if you need help. Also, feel free to provide feedback on improving this tutorial.

Welcome to the new Alaskan Knitters Ring!

I have run into a few Alaskan Knitters with blogs out there, so I thought it would be really interesting to start our own ringsurf. That way we can stay in touch about all things Alaskan as well as our fiber love. It will probably be a smaller ring, since there are not many Alaskans out there! So please, join in the fun and camraderie of those who only understand what it is like to live in the Great Land, as well as the need for knitted items to stay warm!

Rules are:

1. You must either have lived in Alaska or currently live in Alaska.
2. You must have an interest in knitting, crochet, spinning, fiber or yarn.
3. You must post to your blog at least once a week, and your blog must have existed for at least one month prior to joining. You must also post regularly (at least once a month) with knitting, crochet, spinning and fiber content.
4. Your blog must be written in English.
5. The ring code must be correct and must be visible on the page where your blog is located.
6. You are responsible for making changes to your blog information (new url, new email, new blog name).
7. You have one week from the time you submit your site to get your ring code up and running correctly.
8. You will receive a message from RingSurf with your Ring Code and Ring ID. Please keep this message or your records.
9. These rules may be amended at any time as needed by the ringmaster(s).

If you have problems or questions, please email me at yarngineerATgmailDOTcom. Please be patient, as I am knew to hosting a blog ring, and will have to figure things out along the way. This site is still under construction. Please feel free to submit your pictures and suggested buttons for us to use!

If you have any privately taken, non-copyrighted scenic photos we can use for our button, or you want to create a button, please let me know! We must be careful not to use any pictures that we have to pay for the rights for or will get us in trouble with property laws.
